Product Description
Opteka specializes in manufacturing special optical devices for the past several years, would like to take this opportunity to introduce a newly developed product called the "HD² Infrared X-Ray Effect See-Through Multi-Coated Filter". This filter makes it possible for you to see images that are normally invisible to the human eye. It sounds like science-fiction but it isn't; this fantastic new product has been developed using the most highly advanced optical technologies available. This filter will filter out 99% of light seen by the naked eye only allowing infrared light through so that technically the naked eye can see 100% black when the filter is in place. Multi-coating prevents light reflection, ghost light...etc, making images clearer and sharper. On your digital camcorder, turn the "Nightshot" function on - the naked eye cannot pick up the high contrast black, so with the infrared filter and Nightshot combination, for example, it will help you see in the images provided, that we 'accidentally' spilt some permanent ink on this document and the text is now impossible to read. However, when we attached the filter to our Sony 'TR250PK' camcorder, the writing is clearly legible through the ink - thus the x-ray effect! The Opteka IR Filter is also able to see through some types of clothes, for example, thin clothes, tight clothes, sundresses, swimsuits, sunglasses, and so forth. Be aware that this means that you can see a person's body or underwear through the external garment. In other words, this filter allows you to "see through" someone's clothes. You will be amazed with the power if you take the time to experiment and experience its capabilities for yourself. If you already have a digital camcorder with the Nightshot feature and are interested in experimenting with the X-Ray effect, this is by far the least expensive method, giving you the results you are looking for. Just screw on the filter, switch on the 'Night' feature, and you are ready to go!

4 out of 5 stars Reasonable product   August 4, 2010

You don't expect to see X-ray, I hope. The filter works, and works fine even not the extra stuff they discribed.

1 out of 5 stars Not for D300   January 29, 2010

I took a chance on this item hoping it would work on my D300, and so far I have had no l luck. I don't get anything even in direct sunlight. Maybe someone can show me how to work it as per experience, otherwise it's a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars IR filter   November 28, 2009

Filter is very cool. Took me quite a while to figure out the best setting with the camera to get a good shot, but after I did, it is great.

4 out of 5 stars Despite the misleading description, this IR filter is fun, and does work.   September 21, 2009

The Opteka R72 IR filter is a need little add-on. Unless you get VERY into infrared photography, you probably won't pull it out for too many shots. But it is very capable for what it is. However, for people who are not aware of what it's like to take these shots, the manufacturer description can seem a bit misleading. I know it was a pretty big exaggeration ahead of time, but could easily see how others would buy into the hype. For starters, you aren't going to be able to simply attach this to any camera, and take pictures through the clothes of attractive young ladies. As the amount of light (specifically near-infrared/infrared) that gets through is MUCH less than of an unfiltered lens, your exposure times have to be substantially longer than under normal conditions. For example, during regular daylight, you will find yourself doing exposure times of 15-20 seconds or higher. But like stated earlier, as long as you know what you are getting into, this will open up a fun, new aspect of photography for anyone who wants to try something a little different.
