MAC USERS PLEASE READ! June 17, 2010 Ellen Kaplinsky This camera is an amazing camera. It has GREAT quality. Works with imovie. But if you do video editing like me and use anything of apples editing products other than imovie like Final Cut this camera is NOT compatible with it. You can not access the raw files, just imovie picks it up. But if not, and you are a mac user, and use iMovie you are fine.
A good value June 9, 2010 M. Cloutier (WA, United States) This camera is quite good for the price and I don't think anyone will be disappointed with it as long as they know what they are buying. The lack of optical image stabilization is one of the reasons the camera is sold at this price. You will need a steady hand to prevent shaky images, particularly when using the fantastic zoom. The picture quality in bright light is fantastic. It can get very grainy with low interior lighting. Overall very happy for the price I paid.
A Very Good HD Video Camera May 27, 2010 Donald P. Martin Jr. (Concord, NH) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's been about a year since I got my JVC Everio GZ-HM200, and now I see there is a newer version of the camera. Also, the price of the camera I have had dropped SIGNIFICANTLY. So first thing's first: at the price it's currently offered, this camera is a serious deal.
It really is a great camera to use; it is small and portable and user-friendly. But before I say anything about the qualities of the camera, I'll be honest; my wife and I both use her "regular digital camera" for movies about ten times as often as we use this camera. Whenever we go out, she'll pocket her camera because that's what we've always done. So even with the portability, the every-day practicality of the camera, for us, was challenged by the even-more portable, practical Kodak 10.1 MP camera. For special occassions, we do make sure the JVC is charged up and ready to go.
That said, there is one very important thing to know about this JVC; there are two slots for memory cards that you will most likely want to fill with fairly good-sized memory cards. We put two 32GB cards in for sheer storage, and it cost us (at the time) about $100. I'm sure the prices on SD cards go down all the time as well, but even if it has, it is an extra expense, and you should be aware of it.
The picture quality of the camera is wonderful. Mind you, you might see one or two people putting samples up here on Amazon, and that is terrific, but remember this is an HD camera, and a little 2-by-2 inch square on your computer monitor is not going to do any justice to even the best camera in the world. To appreciate it, you'll need to see movies played back on your 32" or 40" or 60" high-def screen at home, whatever size you might have. Also, remember that the camera is a hi-def camera and NOT a high def player per se. You need to have a high-def medium to appreciate the difference between plugging the camera into an HD TV (even with the special cable which is NOT included in the package). We watched some video produced to a DVD on my dad's brand new 47" HD TV this past week, and it is a world of difference from connecting the camera to a TV. I hope that all made sense!
The one thing that really bothers me about the display screen on the camera is that it is not a touch-screen, which you perceive it should be; it is one of those displays that has instructions on-screen, but you have to touch one of the corresponding buttons beneath to activate the function. It takes a lot of getting used to.
Now that I am used to it, I really do love the camera, but the really important question you should ask yourself before you buy it is the one I led off with; am I really going to pack this wherever I go, or am I going to use my digital camera to take movies with? It's an honest question before you spend even the very-good-deal $$$ on this very nice camera. I'd do it again, but you might not want to.
The Good Outweighs The Bad April 22, 2010 Kort Kramer (South Florida, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1NBGPKPE34RH4 I'll get right to it. I feel the JVC Everio GZ-HM200BU is a good consumer grade HD videocamera for the enthusiast who values portability and does a lot of outdoor recording. It is not best suited for shooting indoors in artificial light and in close-up situations, or for quick and easy uploading to the web.
LIKES:
1) Great quality HD video. I use it at the second to highest setting with excellent results. I would use the x.v.Color feature but don't have or know of anyone who has the equipment to properly view it just yet.
2) Very compact and lightweight, making it very easy to take everywhere.
3) Dual SD slots for recording. When one fills up it automatically switches to the other. I can record for up to 4 hours in XP mode with two cards (but I'd need a larger battery for that)
4) Decent battery life, nearly two hours. Larger sizes w/longer record times are available.
5) Glad to have a remote control
6) Good focus in bright light.
7) Easy -- dare I say fun -- interface, once you get used to it.
8) Automatic built-in lens cover.
9) Good image stabilization, until you go over 10x zoom.
10) Turns on automatically when you open the clear, bright, articulated screen. The screen can face forward or fold back to the housing so that it faces out.
11) Logical controls.
12) Smooth 20x optical zoom with the option to go 80x digital. Stick with the 20x or suffer a big dip in video quality.
13) Built-in adjustable hand strap.
14) Can take still photos while shooting video. Quality is better than some I've seen yet still not on par with a comparable dedicated still camera. When switched to still only mode, the photo quality improves.
15) Lots of options and features, many of which I may never take full advantage of.
DISLIKES:
1) A HDMI output and cable would have been nice. There is an HDMI output, but it is the less common Type-C port.
2) Okay front mounted microphone, but I was disappointed in the overall sound quality.
3) Build materials seem flimsy. It is okay so far, but I am afraid I might break something if I'm not always careful. I lost the rubber cover for the USB port soon after I started using the HM200BU.
4) The lens is not very wide angle. To fully capture a six-foot tall standing subject, you need to be about 15 feet away from them. This limits what you can capture indoors.
5) Focus is not very fast in low light conditions and can be lost completely depending how for out you zoom.
6) Quality of the recording takes a hit indoors and there are some color balance issues, though no deal breakers.
7) Can't record with screen closed and no optical viewfinder, though I expected that.
8) The small button for photo still capture is just below the zoom dial but not always easy to press correctly, sometimes resulting in missed photos.
9) It has a little light at the front, but it is pretty much useless in dark conditions.
10) There is a bit of a learning curve with the unintuitive menus and it takes a while to get a hang of the laser touch scroll bar. I sometimes overshoot the selections I'm trying for - it is not overly precise.
11) The software that comes with the HM200BU is pretty much useless on my Mac.
12) The one touch feature to upload to YouTube is not overly intuitive and takes forever to even upload a short video, and then even longer for YouTube to convert the file.
13) I find the AVCHD MPEG-4 file format a bit bulky and hard to convert to lower resolution formats.
Get this HD videocamera if you want good quality HD video in a very portable, convenient and relatively inexpensive form factor. Just realize its limitations. If you want to have good quality indoor footage you're going to need to spend more and step up to a larger sensor size. You'll need a tripod or some other stabilizer if you plan on doing a lot of filming with a zoom factor of 10x or more. If you don't have an HDTV and are not planning on getting one soon, you may want to stick with a more low-end solution. While convenient, it is not the best videocamera for taking your footage and sharing it right away on the web. Flip videos or even digital cameras are better for that. Some Mac users found the process painless, but I'm not one of them.
I give the JVC Everio GZ-HM200BU my qualified recommendation. 3.5 stars.
